BUSINESS TRAVEL: NUMBERS DOWN, SPENDING UP

The post-recession environment continues to be challenging for the world’s tourism industry; despite that, people are still travelling. Business travel continues to be soft on numbers, but is showing improvement in overall spending. Visa is reporting that account holders spent 14% more in 2011 over 2010 on both personal and business travel-related purchases in 2011. At the turn of the century, more than 576 million trips were taken and $242.9 billion spent. Last year the number of trips increased to 445 million (down 23%), but spending grew to $251 billion.
